Meet Steve and Sarah
“Sarah was shocked to say the least. Steve had just announced that he didn’t feel like going to Bible class or the assembly, but what shocked her the most was her own relief. She wasn’t much up to going, either. She still had her faith. She believed God was there, and she believed Jesus had died for her. She was really thankful for that. It was just that the weekly grind of “church-as-normal” wasn’t cutting it for her. She felt like she was missing something and thought she was the only one. She was relieved to know Steve was right there with her” (“Plugged In: High Voltage Prayer-The Classbook,” p. 3).
So begins our story. Steve and Sarah have hit a rough patch. They begin to think the answer lies in a geographical cure. That is, they think that just changing churches might fix the problem. Providentially, brother Davis checks in on them and challenges them to thirteen weeks of prayer. He promises to introduce them to 12 major lessons about prayer that just might turn their spiritual lives around. The struggling couple agree and have no idea how profoundly these studies will impact their lives.
While Steve and Sarah are fictional, they are completely true. That is, I don’t know anyone who has gone through exactly what this couple does in the story, nor do I know people who completely mirror the other characters who teach the lessons on prayer. But every bit of this story comes from the lives of real Christians. There is no glossing over or acting like being a Christian is all roses. This book faces some of the honest struggles real, sincere Christians face, showing how prayer helps us through the good times and the bad. Based on that, not only will you get to learn some great lessons about prayer, you’ll get to take an honest look at life as a Christian and how prayer really can help you right where you are.
