The Gospel of the Kingdom:
Studies in the Sermon on the Mount
Who has not spent time within the Sermon on the Mount? Who has not rejoiced in the promise to “ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you?”
Who has not quaked at the warning that “many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord’…then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me you who practice lawlessness’”?
Who has not struggled with the instruction to “not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek turn the other to him also”?
Who has not been refreshed, challenged and rebuked by Jesus in this sermon?
Yet we keep coming back to it. We are drawn to it, knowing it contains the concentrated essence of what Jesus wants us to be. For whatever reason we come to the sermon, if we study it deeply, we cannot leave unchanged. No wonder Matthew called it “the gospel of the kingdom.
Find out just how shocking and radical Jesus’ sermon was. Then work to apply it radically to your life.

Behind the Preacher’s Door
More and more we hear stories of fallen preachers. I’m not sure there is anything more sad. Financial ruin, moral ruin, family ruin. We can sometimes put on a good show out in public until everything completely falls apart. We don’t need cover ups. What we need is preachers who are willing to take a look at what goes on behind their closed doors and start letting the freeing gospel of Jesus help us as we want it to help others.
“Behind the Preacher’s Door” is a great start to get this done. Edited by Warren Berkley, “Behind the Preacher’s Door” includes chapter written by gospel preachers such as Russ Bowman, Jason Hardin, Ken Weliever, Curtis Pope, David Banning and several others. There are chapters on the preacher and his money, the preacher and pornography, the preacher and his family, the preacher and his friends.
I was privileged to write two chapters for this awesome little book: “The Preacher’s Temptation to Commit Adultery” and “The Preacher’s Toys-Technology’s Impact on His Work.” I’m excited to be part of this watershed book. I hope it will be helpful to young men thinking about preaching and getting started, and also to our older brethren who have fought this fight and need to be uplifted even still.
I want to say thanks to the preachers everywhere who I believe endure the heaviest attacks from our enemy. Satan knows if he can get us, he gets more than just us. He makes Christians look bad, he makes churches look bad, he makes Jesus look bad. We need to step up to the plate, put on our armor, and fight the good fight by our faith in Jesus Christ. I believe this book is a tool to help.
